Drum Beats...

This month's message from your Longhouse Chief

Hello and Merry Christmas to all,

What a great time of year, isn't it? The snow is falling. Christmas shopping & giving is in full swing. Everyone's schedules are filled in anticipation of spending time with their friends, families, loved ones and the kids are counting the days until Old St. Nicholas arrives.

As I think about all of the activities and traditions that take place during this Holiday season, I can't help but draw a parallel to the Indian Princess program. Consider this.At the center of almost all of the wonderful Holiday activities we enjoy is Christmas, the cornerstone of the Holiday Season. At the center of all the Indian Princess activities we enjoy is a single hope, the hope that by you spending time with your daughter(s), you will build strong bonds and relationships that will last a lifetime!

We have had an AWESOME start to the 2008-2009 IP year. Two of the goals for the Longhouse this year were to build up the program membership and increase participation in Longhouse events. I am happy to report to everyone that with the exception of a rainy day Fall Family Picnic, we have met this goal for each activity we have had this year!!! Our recruitment is up, attendance at the square dance and fall campouts were up and the Princesses sold 16% more wreaths than we did last year! A big HEAP-HOW to everyone who has helped make this a banner year.and we are just getting started! If you haven't had the chance to help with an event, please consider helping out in some way. I encourage and invite everyone, regardless of how much time you can give us to help with some event throughout the year. If you can help with an event, please contact Kate Keegan or myself.

As exciting as the start of this year has been, your Indian Agent and Longhouse, have made great progress in finalizing dates and venues to round out the rest of the program year. In fact the next Longhouse event is right around the corner on December 28. Please join us for a great time Ice Skating (and eating pizza) at South Point and don't forget this is a Bring-A-Friend event! Make sure you check the website www.princesspatter.org for the most up to date information on all remaining Longhouse activities. There is a GREAT set of activities planned for the rest of the year.

Well, it's time to put another log on the fire so I will close this letter, leaving you with a final wish: If you can look past the hustle of the season, the demands on everyone's time, the schedules and the stress.you will hopefully find the simple beauty this season has to offer and reconnect with the magic it held for you when you were a child. May you share that magic with your children and families throughout this Holiday Season.

On Behalf of the Longhouse and your Indian Agent Kate Keegan:

Merry Christmas and a Safe, Happy New Year!!

See you around the campfire.
